Name: Puppy
Species: Tree-spirit (cherry tree)
Height: 6' (182 cm)
Tree spirits are able to leave their trees, but it's a risky move. Their lives our bound to their trees, and if anything happens to the tree the the spirit will perish. Their magic also grows weaker the further away from the tree they get. Most spirits are content living their lives within the branches of their own trees.
Puppy is a little unusual in that he spends more times among humans than he does among the forest. While he does visit his tree often, he spends more time away from it than he does with it.
To understand Puppy's story it's important to understand the history of a man, or... sort of a man, named Namu.
Namu was a tree spirit bonded to a cherry tree in a quiet little park in Seoul, South Korea. When Namu and his tree were about fifteen (middle age for that species) renovation was done on the park, and several trees were torn down to expand the roads around that area; Namu's tree was among those on the literal chopping block.
The problem is that a tree spirit cannot live without its tree, but despite the short lived nature of Namu's species he wasn't ready to go yet. When men came to trip his tree up, Namu reached into its very core and pulled out a chunk of the tree, keeping a section of it still barely alive, and saving his own life in the process. The problem was that Namu was not a tree spirit without a tree, and not clue what to do in life.
An organization, that specializes in keeping humans unaware of the magical beings that exist around them and helping displaced creatures like Namu, set him up with an apartment, a human guide, and by accident another human companion who came along for the ride. The human in charge of his case, Taerim, was a bright and helpful man, which is fortunate, because the other human who stumbled into his life, Rats, was as clueless about how to be a human as Namu himself was. Rats had lived outside of human society for the vast majority of his life, which mean Namu had a companion in awe at new discoveries he made every single day.
Taerim had his hands full.
The three men fell into a comfortable friendship with some ups and downs here and there, but overall a pretty happy life was lived for a few years.
And then something horrible happened. Something attacked his human companions, and Namu sacrificed his own life to keep them safe. All that he left behind was the piece of his tree he had carefully guarded all this time, and seeds from his tree before it was destroyed.
All of these seeds were planted, but only one produced a tree, and that single tree produced another life bound to it the way that Namu had been bound to his tree.
Puppy was born.
Initially the baby did not leave his tree, but cherry trees grow fast, even unusual trees like Puppy's. Instead of pink or white, the flowers were purple, and while there was nothing else visibly off about the tree, there was something strange about it. Not anything that would cause alarm, just... unusual.
Within ten years Puppy had rushed all the way past adolescence, and entered his adult life. As a child he had spent time in Taerim's apartment, Rat's (once Namu's) apartment, and his own tree often, though the older he got the more time he spent among humans. His life is largely uneventful and idyllic, and while he enjoys traveling small distances, he's happy with his peaceful existence.
• Friendly
• Plucky/optimistic
• Somewhat sheltered
• Good at obfuscating how much he understands at any given point in time
• He usually understands a lot more than it seems
• Very protective of those he loves
• Extremely interested in learning
• Curious about the world, and discovering secrets few to no others know
• Somewhat conflicted about his own existence
• When upset very careful about sharing these emotions with others as to not hurt or burden them
